Rasa Ria
About This Spot
Stepping into Rasa Ria feels like discovering a quiet corner of Malaysia and Indonesia tucked away in Kalamazoo’s everyday rhythm. The space is intimate, with just a handful of tables, inviting you to slow down and savor the moment—it’s a place where the pace naturally softens, giving way to warmth and familiarity. The subtle hum of quiet conversations and culinary aromas mingle, creating an atmosphere that’s both welcoming and unpretentious.
Here, the focus is gently placed on the food and its stories. It’s in the way a fragrant bowl of curry arrives — rich and comforting, layered with coconut milk and fragrant spices that hint at home kitchens far from Michigan. The air carries whispers of smoky satay grills, fragrant rice dishes bursting with tropical notes, and the subtle heat of sambal that invites you to take another bite.
Rasa Ria draws a crowd that appreciates authenticity, whether lingering over thoughtfully prepared rendang or grabbing a carry-out meal born of careful preparation. The folks behind the counter move with a quiet kindness, aware of each visitor’s moment, and the connection made over a shared meal here feels genuine. It’s not just about nourishment, but about a small voyage of taste and texture — where simple ingredients become an experience that lingers.
While the seating may be limited and the space modest, that fosters a sense of closeness among diners. Whether you’re returning for the subtly sweet curry puffs or trying the ginger-spiced noodle dishes for the first time, there’s an element of discovery at every visit. It’s a place where the genuine care in cooking meets the everyday need for something satisfying and familiar, making it a quietly cherished part of Kalamazoo’s diverse dining landscape.

I’ve driven by this restaurant and never stopped…don’t be me. Finally made it a point to visit Rasa Ria and glad I did. Invited my son along and he got us a table near the front (there aren’t too many tables but it seems like they have a good carry out business.) Got this delicious chai -type drink (no alcohol that I could see) and looked at their extensive menu. Was about to get some recommendations from our server, and she pointed to the special of the day…a lamb curry dish with rice. Sold. The lamb was tender, the curry sauce spice level great and the rice was tasty. Lots of choices we could have gone with on the menu, so great reason to go back.

I came in last night and placed a pickup order. The man who took my order was patient and polite. About 20 minutes later my food was packaged mindfully and ready to go! The woman who handed me my food was very friendly! Portions were generous and the food was very fresh. Made with a lot of care. The tea is very good too!

This is one of the best restaurants in Kalamazoo. Truly an absolute treasure of our area. Delightfully spiced Indonesian & Malaysian dishes with unique flavors, great textures, and excellent quality. The noodle dishes are always great(bakmi goreng java), all of the rendang dishes are amazing with their own unique flavor profiles, and the mi sup asam pedas(spicy seafood soup) is to die for. I'd eat here everyday if I could.

Fantastic experience! The food was authentically prepared and full of flavor. The Beef Rendang, fried rice, and Mee Goreng Seafood were all exceptional. Highly recommend!

Great Malaysian foods, specially the fried rice Nasi Goreng Kampung. It was very tasty, but oily. Also tried Roti Kanai which comes with a small amount of chicken curry in coconut flavor and one Parata. Didn't like the taste of Parata as they are using just supermarket ones which is kind of weird taste. Serving is fast. Seating arrangement very very limited. Only 3 small table where barely 5-6 people can sit.

Small unassuming restaurant in small unassuming strip mall that serves Malaysian and Indonesian fare. I was in Kalamazoo for the day so I thought I would stop in and try it. I had the beef rendang and a curry puff. I was not disappointed.

Update: All the Chicken dishes at this restaurant are "Halal". They have a great selection of chicken dishes.. The Chicken curry with the paratha is absolutely delicious and the Sweet & Sour chicken was pretty good as well. Looking forward to going back and trying the remainder of the chicken menu. It's a nice little Indonesian-Malaysian restaurant. Located at West Main. They offer variety of Chicken, beef, shrimp, fish and veggie options. We went to try the Tuesday special of Fish Curry with eggplant/beans. It was really good, although the rice could be served hot instead of being just plain cold which tasted like microwavable rice. The husband and wife who run the restaurant are really nice people and try to get to know you while providing great service coupled with delicious food at the same time. Overall it's a good restaurant to try different flavors. There is fish, shrimp and vegetarian options for people looking for Halal food. There is very limited seating space so finding a table could be struggle at busier times.
